In the public libraries that emerged the shelves and stanchions were often made of iron as it was felt that they would last longer in that material and the fashion was not too relevant.
In the economy of the world as we know it today people often like DIY "do it yourself" and the building of bookshelves is an ideal way to save money.

It does not take a lot of woodworking knowledge to get some plywood, cut it into the lengths you require and fit it all together. I think this is the future way as it is certainly a lot cheaper to build a leaning ladder bookshelf in this way than to pay a lot of money from the stores.

Top Ten Uses For a Coffee Table Or End Table

There are some things a home can't be complete without, like a refrigerator, a bed, or a television. A home is not a home without things that can provide comfort and convenience, and can allow the household members to relax and to unwind. Included in this varied list, among other things, should be a dependable and versatile living room table. Many people do not realize how indispensable this piece of solid wood furniture is. It can certainly do more than serve coffee, or hold lampshades.

No problem - Yes, a sturdy table can be used for instant elevation when a light bulb needs to be replaced, curtains have to be changed, or dust webs require to be swept away from ceiling corners. But never attempt this, of course, on glass or wicker tables. Only solid wood furniture types fit perfectly for this particular use. This can be another consideration why a wooden table is a better investment than a glass one - aside from the other common fact that glass is fragile and very dangerous, especially in a household full of children. There are numerous instances wherein a homeowner would need that extra height, especially for emergencies.

8. A clear space for doing arts and crafts - If the table is not going to be used for displaying items, it can be left clear for sessions like doing artwork, finishing crafts like scrapbooks, puzzles, or assembling toys like wooden sets, cars, or robots. How to Build an Inexpensive Goldfish Pond

Building a small goldfish pond in your yard can be a fun weekend project and the kids will enjoy it all summer. Depending on what climate you live in, the pond will have slightly different requirements for those areas with sub-freezing temperatures. You can however with a little but of junk hunting, build your pond for only a few dollars. In cold winter areas it is important to have a way to drain the pond for the winter to clean it. A drain piping explanation is further down this article.

First pick the best area of your yard for the pond. You do not want it in full sun or full shade all day. A mixture of the two would be real nice. It will help your plants thrive and also keep the algae growth down as well. I have one pond in partial or mottled shade all day and it does very well and stays perfectly clean. If the pond will have a natural outlet and be filled occasionally with a hose that is about the best scenario you can get. I have a small pond that is filled by a very small underground spring that drips into the pond all the time but it also has an outlet pipe that exits into a wet area so the pond never needs filling of emptying. The small pond measures eight feet long by five feet wide by 2 feet deep. I keep thirty small goldfish in this pond and they do very well. Aside from eating bugs and mosquitoes the kids love to visit every day and put a few pinches of food in for them.

I selected my pond space in a shaded area of my yard near some large Maple trees as I wanted to be able to sit in the shade on hot summer days and enjoy the fish and the sound of the water without being in the full sun. I also built several raised planting beds at different heights around the pond out of flat field stones available on my property. There are many shade tolerant plants including Hostas, Varigated Hostas and Dead Nettle which spread with each passing year and with the different shades of greens and white leaves and purple flowers on the Nettle, the gardens have more then enough visual interest.

Once you have decided how large you want the pond itself, you have really two choices of pond types to choose from. Pre-made PVC pond liners are available in many shapes and sizes today. Many liners have built in plant shelves and light openings if you wish to add lighting to your pond. They range in sizes from a 1/2 barrel to huge ponds which require large filter systems and pumps to run. The small ponds you may be able to excavate by hand, the larger ones will require some heavy equipment like a backhoe perhaps to move that much earth The pond size and heavy equipment will certainly raise your price of course.

Another way to build a pond is to use rubber roofing membrane. You will find articles telling you not to use it because it has chemicals on it etc., etc. I washed mine before using it with a good soapy solution and rinsed it well to remove all soap residues. The membrane comes in twelve foot wide rolls and every time I see a school getting a new roof you can pretty well bet there are large scraps of rubber in the dumpsters. Almost all commercial buildings today use rubber membrane roofing available with some small effort of dumpster diving. Remember the pond should be two feet deep so four feet plus at least six inches on each top are wasted for a total of five feet. That would allow you a seven foot wide pool bottom. Depending on the length of the piece you get, just deduct two and one half feet on each end for the walls and top edging. Twelve foot long pieces would end up seven feet across the bottom. That's a seven foot by seven foot pond, two feet deep. That's a lot of water and can hold a great many goldfish.

I decided that I wanted my last pond raised up instead of flush with the ground. Using flat field stones I built oblong shaped pond walls two feet high. I placed several bags of play sand in the bottom and raked it smooth. Make absolutely sure there are no rocks or sticks in the bottom of the pond area. Any sharp protrusion can poke a hole through the liner material. Be somewhat careful on the sides as well to avoid pointy rocks facing or projecting into the inside of the pond. The water weight will force the liner to assume the shape of the inside walls so keep them as smooth as possible. A friend of mine used masonry stack blocks meant for a retaining wall for his side walls, lined the inside with the membrane and placed finished cap blocks on top. You can sit on top of the wall and watch the gold fish as they dart back and forth.

After installing my liner, I used large flat stones for my cap block after folding the last six inches of membrane over onto to the top of the walls. The folds do not have to be perfect as they will not be seen below the stones but make sure the stones do not rock back and forth when they are in their final positions. You want the cap stones to hang over the inside edge of the wall a couple of inches as well so the liner is not visible where it folds onto the top of the wall. A small portion of the vertical side wall will show depending upon on how high you keep the water level of the pond but the shadow produced by the overhanging cap stones makes it almost invisible. Black liner hides any small folds you leave behind as well. I have not tried white liner although I know they do make it. Goldfish show up very well in black ponds.

Next add a couple of water plants. There are hundreds to choose from and a trip to your local Koi or Garden store will open a whole new gardening experience for you. Many come in pots that are placed directly into your pond. I recommend you presoak the plants until water runs out of the bottom of the pot before placing it into the pond. This will help prevent loose dirt from floating out and making your pond dirty when you sink the pots into the water. The added water weight in the pot may also be required to actually make the pots stay on the bottom. If the plant is too short to reach the waters surface, get creative by adding some flat stones to make the plants work. The fish will love the added little nooks and crevices to hide in during sunny periods or just when they are playing.

If your pond is a closed system meaning no fresh water supply or discharge channel, give some thought as to how you are going to empty the pond for cleaning once a year. It can be done with a sump pump or add a two inch PVC discharge pipe open to free air if it is available. Many locales do not allow you to discharge pond water into the sewer system so be careful. If you have free air, install a two inch PVC pipe under the pond and turn it up into the pond using an elbow. Glue the elbow to the pipe with the proper PVC cement.
Wrap a small plastic bag over the elbow to prevent any sand or dirt getting into the pipe while you build your pond. Bury your pipe and commence building your walls. Once the walls are complete and the base sand is installed, place your liner into place. Using your lightest helper, cut a small X directly over the elbow, but make sure it is smaller then two inches long on each cut. Now carefully push the membrane down around the elbow leaving the rubber as tight as possible on the elbow. Using a stainless steel hose clamp available at any auto parts store, securely clamp the rubber membrane to the elbow making a watertight joint. At the open air end of the pipe install a two inch PVC gate valve. This valve can be opened for draining and cleaning of the pond whenever necessary.

Fill your pond with clean fresh water. I use a small fish tank aerator pump to provide additional oxygen to the fish. The large surface area of the pond should be more than sufficient to aerate the water but the bubble pump will also prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs in the moving surface waters and it can provide yet another pleasant sound at your new goldfish pond. By scrounging both the rocks and membrane I spent a total of for materials for my pond. Goldfish in my area are 27 cents each so twenty nice fish is a grand total of .40. Not bad for a couple days work. Enjoy your new pond and gardening project.

Building a functioning stained glass workshop in your home is not as complicated as one might think. I have done it and it works great.

First off, it might be informational to point out that our shop is actually in the smallest area (room) in our basement. My wife and I made sure we had adequately lighting by installing two 4 bulb 40 watt florescent light fixtures in the suspended ceiling grid. Next I installed enough outlets in each wall to handle the electrical load even when we solder. Our lights do not dim.

My wife located a fantastic table (Ikea - bruised and abused dept). It was only and its height is adjustable. This table measures 63" long x 30" deep. It is so perfect for making stained glass. Sometimes I want the work surface higher than at other times, depending on what I am doing. I just click a little control under the table and it moves up or down. Since both of us make stained glass together at times, we built an additional table similar in size and my wife added a padded cloth topping to both. This is excellent to cut glass on and we don't risk damaging our cutter blades.

In between each table sets the grinder, which we share. A simple home-made wooden shroud around the grinder keeps things tidier. We have two long shelves on the wall behind our work table which holds all supplies.

Glass storage is always a problem, especially if you are like us and tend to buy closeout pieces from time to time. We have built several stackable "units" that each measure approximately 24" x 13" tall x 12" deep. Each of these units has vertical partitions about 1" apart that allow us to store our glass. We actually have an additional space that allows us to keep the Morton System set up all the time. Our ring saw is also in this room.

Of course a small TV set is anchored in the corner for noise.

Everything in our little stained glass workshop is homemade except for the Ikea adjustable table. We have made lots of pieces of stained glass artwork in this room and will do so in the future.

How to Join Any Two Pieces of Wood

ViSalus is an emerging powerhouse that is rocking the MLM industry and boasts a 28% rate of its distributors making a profit, which is a far cry from the current industry standard of 5%.

ViSalus hit the scene in 2005 and currently ranks in the 93 percentile of all MLMs according to Npros, They have become well-known for their Body by Vi weight loss program as well as their Vi-pak nutritional supplement package and of course Neuro, their body and brain boost product.

Other than having top shelf products their business layout isn't that much different then most of their other health and wellness competitors.

So what is it that enables them to have a distributor profit rate of 28%?

Well maybe a little bit of luck, but I would go a little further and say that it is their perfectly blended product line up and their compensation plan payout.

You see if a company can provide products that work and are in demand and pay their distributors for all of their efforts quickly, you are going to keep a lot of people pumped up, energized and working the business.

That has more to do with it than anything. They don't have super marketers, just happy ones.

Now this is a company and an industry where you need volumes of customers and business builders to balance out attrition (comer's and goer's) and while that 28% distributor profit rate is terrific, it doesn't mean that they are racking in the dough.

It means that at a minimum they are getting their monthly auto-ship paid for and putting a couple of bucks in their pockets, but that is very encouraging and a step in the right direction.

They also tend to have more satisfied customers who are seeing real results and that speaks volumes.

The only real downside that I see is that the training is like most others and relies heavily on the friends and family warm market approach and leans towards recruiting more business builders than product buying customers.

The only problem that I see with that is that as a ViSalus distributor, you are likely to run out of people to talk to and be left scratching your head as to what to do next.

So In Conclusion: I would rate ViSalus very high as a health and wellness business opportunity and encourage distributors to have a game plan to promote these terrific products so you can climb the ladder to success and get to the "Bimmer Club."

DIY Industry Optimistic in Spite of Declines

In spite of declines in the home improvement industry for the second year in a row, future prospects remain optimistic.

According to numbers presented by the Home Improvement Research Institute, the U.S. home improvement products market made 0.5 billion dollars in 2008, which was down from $ 304.3 billion in 2007. In 2009, the industry dropped again to 2 billion. However, it is projected that as various economic stimulus plans gain momentum, and people build cash flow, this number will increase to 0.8 billion in 2010, 1.2 billion in 2011 and continue increasing to 2013. The projected 12% increase for 2011 will be the first double digit increase since 2004.

The overall increase in the renovation industry has become more prominent in today's ailing real estate market. Not only are more consumers primping their homes for sale, but many who were unable to obtain their asking price, have removed their houses from the market and are looking to renovating as an intermediary solution, until things pick up. The downturn in the economy, loss of jobs and layoffs are also forcing homeowners to take on jobs they would otherwise pay a tradesperson to do.

According to Will Parsons, editor of DIY Week, "The trend is for grow your own, cook your own and paint your own."

One sure fire indicator of escalating do-it-yourselfer's is by observing the tool rental industry. Homeowners trying to cut costs will rent a huge variety of equipment instead of paying a professional to do the job. Sunbelt Rentals who operate within Lowe's Co. stores, experienced a 47% increase this spring in online tool reservations.

Home Depot's tool rental division noticed a definite trend in yard rental equipment such as aerators, seeding and dethatching tools. Homeowners are also starting to tackle small excavating jobs and renting their own Bobcat's instead of paying the hefty /hour fees. The company also noticed an increase in the purchase of high end tools such as snowthrowers (45% increase this winter), and large tillers and tractors.

Gasoline powered log splitters are up 5% to 10% in 2009 as homeowners try to save costs on wood. Currently a cord of wood can be anywhere from 0 to 0 depending on the area and the demand. Accordingly, an 81% increase in wood stoves and fireplace inserts was reported by the Hearth Patio & Barbecue Association. Logsplitter.com noticed a 35% increase in sales, and Termberwolf Manufacturing Corp. has sold 11% more log splitters than last year. Home Depot noticed earnings from log splitter rentals rose 22% in the first quarter 2009 compared to the same time last year.

"If you are a person faced with a possible layoff, you aren't going to buy a boat, but you might buy a log splitter," says David Therrien, Timberwolf's chief executive.

Easter weekend is comparable to Christmas in the home renovation industry. If the weather is good, the public will be out in droves, and stores could realize up to 40 percent of their annual sales from Easter weekend to the end of May.

You'll need to use the saw and cut the lumber into five different sections. Make two of them three feet long and three of them six feet long. Screw the two three foot long 2 X 4's onto the center of two of the six foot long 2 X 4's to form "T"s and the three foot sections will become the base of the rack Turn upside down and attach the remaining six foot section to the ends of the base (the 3 foot 2 X 4's) with screws creating a secure base. Secure the base to the ceiling in the backyard shed and screw the utility hooks into the bottom portion (the two 6 foot 2 X 4's), placing them about two feet apart. Now all you have to do is hang the front wheel over one of the hooks and your bike is up out of the way and secure.

This rack design will easily hold up to six bikes at one time. Using this type of bicycle rack is fast and easy so you don't have to spend lots of time fumbling around trying to put the bikes up when not in use. Getting them back down again when you're ready to ride won't be a problem either.

Planning is always a good idea when it comes to home projects, especially if the project has the goal of completing a bookshelf, cabinet, small desk or other furniture item. Woodworking plans are essential for constructing a bathroom cabinet, a headboard for the bed or a shelf to organize all the books scattered about the home. If a homeowner or amateur craftsman has woodworking plans in mind, then those plans should probably be in print as well.

However, the first question to ask might be: What's in a good plan? Many people have found that commercially available woodworking plans can eliminate the guesswork in a project and provide a solid set of guidelines for completing the wood item successfully. Some of these plans don't even need extensive written instructions, if the illustrations are complete and clear. In recent years, written directions have been provided in several of the most-used languages. The greatest benefit of good woodworking plans and patterns is this: A beginner doesn't need to study and become an expert to make the plans work. Woodworking plans, followed carefully, can be surprisingly easy to use.

Good plans will also have a nice photo of the finished item, in addition to ideas for finishing with stain or paint. Some even suggest placement in a particular room or home location. It is quite likely that someone has created a great furniture item previously and has created a plan that will work for anyone else.

How to Make Your Own Fire Pit in 7 Steps

Creating a DIY fire pit may sound tough to do, but it's actually easier than many people believe. Aside from some digging and lifting heavy object, you can create your own outdoor fireplace within a day. All you have to do is grab a shovel, Quick-Sand, cement stones, and follow these 9 steps to create a place to relax and stay warm for years to come.

1. Check Your Local Laws and Ordinances

Some places have certain requirements for DIY fire pits (diameter, depth, location, etc.) that you'll have to use as guidelines before building one. In some states or municipalities, certain fire pits are considered illegal and carry a hefty fine if you choose to ignore them.

2. Be Nice to Your Neighbors

It's best to notify or ask your friends next door if they'll mind the smoke you'll be producing when burning large amounts of wood (or anything at all).

3. Choosing the Right Location

It's best to pick an open area that not only is far enough away from anything flammable, but also a spot that give you and your family enough room to walk around a DIY fire pit. The best distance is 6 ft from the edge, but you may have to judge according to the size of the pit you wish to make.

4. Start Digging

Once you've determined where and how big you want it, dig a circular hole, at least 6" deep for the wood to sit in while it burns. Some use the rim of a tire tractor for measuring the depth, but it's up to you if wish to use one.

5. Create a Shelf

After you've dug to hole, take some of the left over dirt and make a shelf. You should pack it down tightly so that it's sturdy enough for the Quick-Sand that you'll be using later. This is to create a solid base at the bottom for the wood to sit on when burning.

6. Build a Wall

Using the cement stones of your choice, place them around the edge of your DIY fire pit to create a barrier around the fire inside. It should at least be 1' tall and with 2" between each stone.

7. Cover the Bottom

Mix and pour the Quick-Sand (the kind that dries fast) into the bottom of the pit and smooth it out until it's flat. If you want, create a dip in the middle so you can lay some newspaper down to start fires with.

That's all it takes to make a DIY fire pit. Once the concrete has dried in the bottom, you can use it to make as many fires as you wish. This is also easy to clean up after use. Just grab the garden hose and wash it off after you're done or when it needs to be cleaned out. You can also choose to create outdoor fireplaces in different shapes if you want something that others don't have.
